My 2012: A Review

A lot has changed this year, including my hair! Read on and scroll down for photos. :)

It's no secret that I've been pretty absent from the blogosphere this year. I mean, since my post on the delusional intern (Hey, Xuedan!) who's suing Hearst back in February, I haven't really added any new content to Mallory In New York. I know its a terrible excuse, but I've been crazy busy this year. Here's a recap of what I've been up to since my last post:

February 2012: I dyed my hair black. Yeah, black. It may seem a little extreme, but halfway through my internship at Elle I started feeling like my overall look wasn't fashion-y (or edgy) enough, especially compared to the people I was working with. So, I went to a salon, and in a matter of 45 minutes, my hair was eight inches shorter, black, and with bangs. Its very dramatic, to the point that at least three people every day ask me if I'm wearing a wig. I (usually) choose to take it as a compliment.

May 2012: I finished my internship at Elle. At the time of my last post, I was interning for the Market Director at Elle magazine. I was there when Joe Zee was filming "All On The Line", when Elle's famous semi-annual accessories issue was relaunched, and, of course, when that crazy Harper's Bazaar intern sued Hearst. (I guess she never got the memo that fashion internships are unpaid.) I ended up working in the accessories department for my last few months at Elle,  ultimately finishing my internship in mid-May.

June 2012: I fell in love...with Alexander Wang. I was so wrapped up in Elle, that by the time the semester ended, I didn't have any plans for summer. I emailed the HR girl at Alexander Wang, a designer who I've loved since his first season, and was invited to intern during Resort 2013 Market Week in June. I worked in the model closet with the stylist, and it was by far the most incredible experience I've had.

June 2012: I met Karl Lagerfeld. During my week at Alexander Wang, I met Kyle, an aspiring stylist with a healthy (or not-so-healthy. whatever.) obsession with Givenchy. Somehow, after our second day at Wang came to an end, we went from aimlessly wandering around SoHo to walking on the red carpet into a VIP party for Karl Lagerfeld's "Little Black Jacket" at Chanel. Penn Badgley was there. Joan Smalls was there. Carine Roitfeld was there. And, of course, Monsieur Lagerfeld himself! I shook his hand and drunkenly told him how inspirational and incredible and amazing he is. He said thank you and smiled. And he smelled amazing, of course. By far the most incredible night of my life.

June 2012: I FINALLY created an Instagram... So follow me: MalloryInNewYork. It'll be super fun. Promise.

July 2012 - August 2012: I interned at Nanette Lepore. In July, I started interning in the showroom at Nanette Lepore, a designer I've always admired for not only creating quirky, adorable closet staples, but also for manufacturing her entire line right here in New York City. I also helped at Intermezzo, a major fashion trade show, and met Nicole Loher, who's even more adorable in person.

August 2012: I started interning at Jimmy Choo. After a whopping SEVEN fashion internships, I finally secured an internship in what I actually came to New York to do: Buying! I was the only intern for the Retail Department, so it was extremely hands-on, as I worked directly with the Buyers and the Planner. I finished my internship two weeks ago, and I learned so much more during these past few months than I have in the past two and a half years at FIT. I also had my own desk (with a view!).

September 2012: I stopped working at Clinique. As much as I loved working as a makeup artist, I finally got to the point where I wanted to focus 100% of my energy on fashion. Of course, my makeup bag is still 90% Clinique products!

September 2012: I turned 21! And, I feel extremely old.

September 2012: I started working at Juicy Couture. After fashion week, I started job-hunting again, which is always fun (sarcasm). It didn't take long until I landed a job at Juicy Couture, the home of the beloved hot pink track suit. There are actually a lot of fashion-forward pieces at Juicy,  particularly in the higher end BIRD line, which I encourage you to check out. My employee discount is also amazing.

October 2012: I went back to Alexander Wang. For Spring/Summer 2013 Market in mid-September, I headed back to Alexander Wang, but this time as a Stylist Assistant. I worked with Kyle and Jess (the amazing stylist) again, and some of the pieces in the line GLOW IN THE DARK. I seriously cannot wait until the collection hits stores.

November 2012: I went to my first sample sale. Early last month, I waited outside 131 Greene Street for 9.5 hours (10:30-8:00) in thirty degree weather for Alexander Wang's sample sale. I was first in line (of course) and I spent almost all of my savings, but I now wear nothing but Alexander Wang, and I wouldn't have it any other way! Needless to say, I'm obsessed.

December 2012: I was selected as an Intern Queen Campus Ambassador. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Lauren Berger, she's someone I've always looked up to. The self-proclaimed "Intern Queen" completed FIFTEEN internships during her four years at UCF, just a few hours away from my hometown in South Florida. She now runs an internship database for students. Given my past experience, I've been selected to blog for her site in the new year. You can read about that here.

December 2012: My boyfriend and I celebrated our 4th anniversary. I don't talk about my personal life too often on here, but I felt like this is a pretty big milestone, especially for someone my age. My boyfriend, Eric, and I met in history class in 10th grade, and then started dating a year and a half later. He came to New York with me after graduation, and we now live together in an overpriced apartment with our beloved espresso machine. #fairytales

So, that was my 2012. What's next, you ask? Well, I'm heading to Stella McCartney for Pre-Fall 2013 Market in early January, where I'll be working with amazing clothes and amazing models. I'll be sure to do a better job at keeping everyone updated this year!

In the meantime, here are some photos of my 2012:

At my desk at Jimmy Choo, attempting to look professional with my red lipstick and all.

I developed this bizarre habit of giving fake names to the baristas at Starbucks.

I fell in love with the East Side. Its so charming!

Walking through the East Village, I found a mode of transportation far more chic than the train.
I ate a lot  of sushi this year.
Oh, the joys of being 21...

Anna Wintour on Fashion's Night Out! I was literally 6 feet away.

The most major change during 2012? I only wear black now. And I am completely in love with this blazer.
I snapped this (somewhat blurry) pic of Karl Lagerfeld during a party I crashed in June.
Taken at  the event for "Little Black Jacket."
My first Marc Jacobs bag!
After seeing these incredible iPhone cases, I'm more inspired than ever to give up my Droid.
